waterfall to open

RETURN is more transgressive than entry in ‘A Waterfall to Open’. The intermittent waterfall acts as a psychological one-way door, inviting entry by ceasing to flow when one approaches its foot.

However, it discourages return, as it continues to flow when approached from within.

Entry is encouraged, but to exit one has to transgress the wet wall.

‘The threshold is the node which separates two opposing worlds, the interior and the open air, the cold and the warm, the light and the shade. To cross a threshold is thus to traverse a zone of danger where invisible but real battles are fought out.’
– Georges Bataille
