the one & the many

COLLECTING involves selecting. But at some point the collection grows so large, and the moment of collection so distant, that the original grounds for collection have been forgotten.

‘The One’ is a vitrine that asks for ideas of value to be questioned by regular acts of exclusive selection. One item from the collection has been singled out for isolated display.

‘The Many’ is a cabinet that houses the entire collection, save for a single object which is selected for display in ‘The One’

‘[In museums] I find myself in a tumult of frozen creatures, each of which demands, without obtaining it,the inexistence of all others.’
– Paul Valéry-
