benandsebastian are delighted to announce their participation in Recast, a major group exhibition opening on the 28th of August 2025 hosted in the former main reading room of the University of Copenhagen Library on Fiolstræde. Presented in celebration of the 150th anniversary of women’s admission to the University, Recast is curated by Ida Højgaard Thjømøe, Amalie Skovmøller, and Mathias Danbolt.
Within the exhibition benandsebastian present Public Bust Retirement Index, a sculptural and performative intervention comprising over forty sculpted busts of male academics drawn from the University’s collection. Installed on custom powder-coated steel tribunes and bound with straps, the busts will await ranking by faculty and students according to their ‘retirement readiness’ using a nine‑point index in a performative tribunal scheduled for October 2025. The work invites reflection on the busts’ potential timely retirement from the public domain—a mediated and deliberated form of institutional withdrawal, rather than a cancellation.
benandsebastian are honoured to form part of a diverse, internationally and critically‑engaged cohort of artists, comprising: Jeannette Ehlers, Lea Guldditte Hestelund, Jóhan Martin Christiansen, Noah Umur Kanber, Ida Kvetny, Henriette Heise, Anne‑Mette Schultz, Maria Nørholm Ramouk, Nanna Debois Buhl, Elisabeth Toubro, Lea Porsager, Julie Edel Hardenberg, and benandsebastian. Recast is part of the University of Copenhagen’s 150‑year anniversary programme and developed within the Moving Monuments research project. Public responses, interdisciplinary dialogues, performances, and programmes both by and with the participating artists are scheduled throughout the exhibition period, inviting visitors to engage directly with questions of monumentality, patriarchy and colonial history.
